Miami was the Host for the 2011 IFCA North American Slalom Championships; the venue was Virginia Key which is a fantastic spot and Miami’s number one windsurfing spot.
The event was organized by Alex Morales and with the help of Jim on the race committee a total of 11 slalom series were completed during the 3 days event. Over 55 competitors from different countries showed up, such as Aruba, USA, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Belgium, Brazil, Australia and Denmark.
The course was a little longer than usual with 3 jibes and the winds ranged from 10 to 18 knots. The first three sailors had a very close battle for the title with Wilhelm Schurmann BRA999 taking the win just edging out Kurosh Kiani DEN 13 by less than 2 points followed closely by AUS 120 Sean O’Brien in third, Mathias Pinheiro BRA5 in fourth and Diego Domeniani USA 05 in fifth.
Wilhelm Schurmann had this to say about the event: ” We had a great event in Miami, the spot is fantastic and it’s great to sail in clear waters and warm sunny weather with the Miami city on the background. I was on EVO 3 8.6 on all the races and had some very close and exciting competition.”
